Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is your Skip hire period?

Skip Hire is a maximum of 14 days. The collection can be earlier for the standard quoted price or a longer period arranged with us. Please contact us on 01527 459238 for more information.

  • What time will the Skip be delivered?

We deliver between 8.00am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday and between 8.00am - 12.00pm on Saturdays. However, if you require a set time, we would be happy to discuss this with you and do our best to arrange at your convenience if possible.

  • What am I not allowed to put into the Skip and why?

In line with government waste directives for the treatment of potentially hazardous waste we are not able to handle the following waste items as they require specialist processing:

    • Substances hazardous to health such as toxic or corrosive materials or liquids
    • Any liquids of any kind whether contained or not
    • Cans, drums or other containers of any kind unless they are empty and crushed: so incapable of carrying any liquid
    • Medical waste of animal carcasses of any kind or quantity
    • Any other material not listed above, which is considered unsuitable for containment e.g. malodorous waste

    • Asbestos
    • Clinical/Medical Waste
    • Florescent Tubes
    • Solvents
    • Liquids
    • Oil
    • Batteries
    • Plasterboard
    • Hazardous/Toxic Material

  • Why is it important that I do not overfill my Skip?

We will not collect Skips that have been overfilled. You will need to remove items until the Skip is level before we take the Skip. Overfilling your Skip is against the law and can be extremely dangerous, especially if the Skip is placed on a public highway, as contents from your Skip may fall or dust may blow onto the highway and cause a serious accident. The laws governing the acceptable use of Skips can be found in the Highways Act 1980 – section 139 road traffic regulations act 1984.

  • Why is it important to specify where my Skip will be located and that space is available for delivery and collection?

It is extremely important that you tell us where you need your Skip to be located especially if you are not going to be available. It is also important to remember that if your Skip is not going to be located on your property you will need a Skip permit.

  • Do you apply for a Skip permit on my behalf?

We will apply for the permits on your behalf, please note that application times will differ dependent upon Local Authority and could be 1 day – 1 week for approval.

  • How do I protect my driveway?

It is the hirer’s responsibility to ensure that the site is suitable to accommodate the weight of the skip, its contents and the lorry that will be used to deliver and collect the Skip. A & S Skips will not be held responsible for any damage caused to driveways where the hirer has directed us to place the skip. If you are concerned your driveway is unsuitable, please find an alternative site for the skip to be placed.

  • How do Skip Permits work?

If you plan on having a Skip kept on a public highway or verges. You will by law require a permit from your local council. Most councils require the Skip hire company apply for the permit

Skip permits are generally valid from one day to a week, but they can be renewed, at a cost determined by the local authority. The permit must be issued before the skip is placed on the public highway.

If you do not have a permit in place, the Skip can be removed and impounded (and this can be done without warning sometimes), which may cause delays to the work and fines incurred to the hirer.

If your Skip is placed entirely on private land you probably will not need a skip permit. Skip permits can take between three and five days to obtain if the skip is to be left on the road or embankment/verge at the side of the road.
